Take control of your life by taking 100% ownership

written by Julie Sando

Ultimate power lies in ultimate responsibility for everything that we encounter. That means when you get sick, you created that sickness. When you get stuck in traffic, you created that as well. Sound crazy? Buying into this belief will change your life in ways you can't imagine.

When I first started working I was a completely different person, unaware of how painful it was for me to say no. As a result I usually took on more than I could handle. At first I did not see the connection between my challenge of saying no and a reoccurring illness I had. About six times a year I got a severely sore throat that would last a whole week and prevent me from using my voice. I could still be productive at home but I couldn't go to work as I didn't want to get others sick. It was the perfect (yet extremely painful) illness. I had 0% ownership and as a result I kept getting sick. I decided to explore this illness and realized that it was my non-confrontational way of saying no because I was afraid of not being good enough. It got me out of the extra projects I took on. However, I was tired of using up my sick time in the first two months of the year and I wanted to feel healthy. I decided to practice the art of saying no. …immediately. I have never had the same illness again. It has been five years. The power was in taking ownership of my illness and changing my belief that it is best for me to say no.

There are two ways to take ownership. One is to find the belief you are holding that is creating your experience (which is what I did above). Or you can look at your thoughts to see how you attracted this into your life. I believe that what you focus on grows bigger. If you focus on anger, you attract situations that inspire anger. If you focus on joy, you will create more joy. If you focus on traffic, you will receive traffic. If you focus on a quick and easy commute home, the Universe will provide it to you.

Try taking ownership over one thing that bugs you in your life. Ask yourself why you created that situation. Was it because of a belief? Or was it because of the thoughts you are creating? Be prepared for quick and powerful change!

  3. As usual, Laura: YOU ROCK! And I miss you!
And BenevolentWarrior: Glad you liked it! I have a feeling I know you...who are you? :)
    Enjoy all!

  4. Julie: that's a very powerful shift in perspective you have outlined. One of Iris's recent posts re-introduced it to me, and it was quite revealing when I applied it to my recent reoccurrences of back trouble. Turns out I was actually looking for a way to make my family appreciate me and my role. I'm now having fun extending this perspective to my health in general.

There's one point which I'm not sure I've digested completely yet. You say "If you focus on a quick and easy commute home, the Universe will provide it to you."
Hmmm. Would it be more accurate to say "... the Universe will tend to (or over time) provide it to you"? I hesitate to say that all of my focused desires will be manifested immediately. I'm not sure I have complete control over the Universe, just over my experience of it.

It so happens that a freeway closure added a half-hour to my commute today !

  5. Interesting Sree (Is this Rithvic's Sree?!!!...If so, HOW ARE YOU AND YOUR FAMILY?!! Last I heard you had moved.)
I agree with your point about the time delay with the Universe...absolutely. However, what if we were to take total control...why not take total ownership?...We are all making it up anyway so why not make it work to our advantage? :) So we could say that something we focused on earlier that day caused us a delay...maybe it was a thought about "noting goes my way" or "it takes time to get what I want," etc. To me, it helps me feel like there is something I can do about circumstances, vs. only having the perspective that I can choose how I feel about a circumstance...to me both are accurate, but I like to feel like I create my life, not just my experience of it. That belief leads me to feeling anything is possible which is a more powerful outlook on life. What a fun discussion.
Maybe we shouldn't be writing about traffic as it may have had some powerful results yesterday...I suppose that is the part when we take control over how we feel about traffic.

TOO FUN! Thanks for the discussion!

  6. funny that both Rick and I (separately) hit traffic yesterday - it was lightly raining here and that seems to make California drivers slow down. Neither of us let it affect us negatively - I took it has an opportunity to explain "traffic" to Elliot - as we are rarely out. But I have to say it's hard for me to think I could have controlled that... so if I believe that Californians don't slow down when it rains they wouldn't?

  7. I love this! To me, I am just playing with the idea and I like seeing the extreme. The more I am aware of this viewpoint, the more I see these 'coincidences' around me. In the last few days I thought of people I hadn't thought of in YEARS and suddenly one finds me on Facebook, another friend spontaneously updates me on one of them, and the other one called me! So maybe, just maybe, you would have been inspired to take a different route where the rain hadn't hit or cars would have cleared a path for you or somehow you would have been able to leave ten minutes earlier to miss the rain...who knows.

The advantage of making it up that we are in control, is that things don't happen to us, we become more aware of our thoughts and see just how powerful they are, then we start choosing the most positive ones...then we attract more positive things to our lives!

Try it out....that's what I am doing. Even if you don't fully believe it....become more aware of your thoughts and how powerful they are. I've been in awe of how my thoughts manifest. :)

And keep the discussion going...I'd love to hear your experience!

  8. PS One more interesting thought on it, to answer your question Laura...

The Universe doesn't hear "no" - so if you say no traffic, it hears traffic. If you say Californian's don't slow down when it rains, it hears slow down and rain....it is a good practice in focusing on what you want instead of what you don't want.

So instead, Sree, Laura and Rick, next time focus on clear roads and quick rides home safely. See what happens! :) Forget the "T" word. :)

And for those who haven't seen "The Secret" about The Law of Attraction...it is a must see! It is where I started with this way of thinking (besides Option of course). It's powerful and fun!

  9. Julie: yes, it's the same Sree. We're down in Texas now and loving it (esp the warmer weather). I still remember that you were the very first Option/SR face we encountered: you took our pictures that cold December Sunday night when we showed up at the Mountain House for Start-up. Great to 'see' you here!

You make a very good point. I had seen signs last week about an upcoming freeway closure but had put off looking into when and where, and it caught up with me yesterday. Hmmm... I have total control over the Universe... I will certainly try that on!

    BTW, love your website!

  10. YAY, so great to be in touch Sree! I remember that as well! I also remember a photo of the two of you on a rock in front of the Mt. House!

I may be coming to TX on an outreach in the next few months. I'd love to see you all and say hello if you are near! I am not sure what part I'll be in but I'll let ya know! Glad you like my site! It was fun to create!

Keep me posted on what happens when you try it on! I love this stuff!

    Hugs to Rithvic!!!

  11. Love that many are choosing to interact, to share....as it seems the human tendency is to delete, to ignore...not to bother.
I'm not imagening 'control' so much as trusting, that everything is unfolding as it ought, (for me,) Sometime when going to a busy mall for example, focusplaying with the notion that someone is saving a convenient spot for me, and as i get closer, they are starting their vehicle, we communicate gratitude, and that we are approaching, and viola, someone is moving out to make room for me. lol

  12. Great discussion everyone!

I want to point out the way I read Julie's post and wow is it ever helpful for me to view life this way: the circumstance I am in is actually what I (at some level) want for myself, even though I (at another level) may not believe this or understand the reason...yet!

For example, being in traffic used to be one of the few ways to get me to slow down! Now, I make time for myself to meditate, or do nothing and I experience traffic much, much less. We attract exactly what we want...we ARE 100% in control indeed.

    Thanks Julie

  14. Neen (Jeanenne), I love your experience here....thanks for sharing! I sure do miss you and our 'meetings'. :) We WILL talk soon! I love to see examples of great change after taking ownership....I am still surprised and in awe at hwo powerful we each are!
BenevolentWarrior, Great to 'meet' you on Facebook! :) Love the mall trick you wrote about! Trust is a great way to say it! That makes perfect sense to me.
Keep the comments comming guys! I lvoe to hear about your experiences with this stuff!

  15. I've been thinking more about this topic. I said at the end of my previous comment, "we ARE 100% in control indeed". I've changed my thinking on this. It's not so much that each of us are in control of life (like puppeteers or something)...there are much bigger forces and energies going on. Taking OWNERSHIP is different than being 100% in control. There is no need for CONTROL when we take ownership of our experience!
